Why Do Americans Accept Wealth Inequality?

See on Scoop.it - Psychology Update

The belief in individual choice affects beliefs about wealth inequality…

It is clear that many Americans who are not in wealthiest 20% support policies that maintain the inequality in the distribution of wealth. Over the past fifteen years, tax rates have been cut across the board and attempts to increase tax rates on the wealthiest 1 to 2% of Americans have been blocked. The politicians who have blocked these tax increases have been re-elected. Clearly, many people are voting for these candidates, suggesting that there is broad support for the current inequality in wealth.

Why is that?

Human Thought Can Control This Robot

See on Scoop.it - Psychology Update

The Virtual Embodiment and Robotic Re-embodiment project created a robot controlled by human thought, using magnetic resonance imaging.

Researchers use functional magnetic resonance imaging to scan the brain of a student as he imagined each individual limb. Scientists mapped out his brain wave patterns, and translated them into commands to make the robot move. The student was then able to control the robot’s movement entirely by thinking about moving.

In the Age of Anxiety, are we all mentally ill?

See on Scoop.it - Psychology Update

NEW YORK (Reuters) - “When Cynthia Craig was diagnosed with postpartum depression eight years ago, she told her family doctor she felt anxious about motherhood.”

Like an increasing number of people, she was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder. But was it a reasonable diagnosis in her case, or indeed, in so many other cases?

Some psychiatrists say the increase in the prevalence of anxiety from about 4 percent to 50 percent is the result of psychiatrists and others “getting better at diagnosing anxiety.”

Critics, including other leading psychiatrists, disagree. They say the apparent explosion in anxiety shows there is something seriously and dangerously wrong with the DSM. Its next edition, due in May, would lower the threshold for identifying anxiety.

Can sounds trick the brain into perceiving your body differently?

See on Scoop.it - Health Studies Updates

(Medical Xpress) — “Have you ever found yourself paying attention to the sound of your footsteps when walking down a quiet corridor? Or perhaps you enjoy creating rhythmic patterns by tapping on a surface? Almost every bodily movement we make generates an impact sound and a team of academics have been studying whether the perception of the physical dimensions of our body can be challenged by spatially altering the ‘action’ sounds we make.”

Rejoinder to Gary Guttings Doubts about the Behavioral Sciences

See on Scoop.it - Psychology Update

Gary Gutting, Professor of Philosophy at Notre Dame, published an opinion piece on the New York Times Opinionator pages. In it he spoke of the “severely limited reliability of social scientific results” and asserted that “While the physical sciences produce many detailed and precise predictions, the social sciences do not.”

If Dr. Gutting’s assessment of the behavioral sciences were accurate, it would mean that there is little hope for society. If it is impossible, as he speculates, to rigorously investigate the factors that influence human behavior, we shall never evolve a society that has less conflict, crime, academic failure, depression, suicide, drug abuse, teenage pregnancy, marital conflict, or obesity. Physical and biological science will continue to produce a steady stream of findings and technologies, but we will continue to cope with these evolving and sometimes harmful developments with no greater capacity to influence behavioral and cultural developments than was true three hundred years ago.

New Study Demystifies Neuroscience's Most Celebrated Case

See on Scoop.it - Psychology Update

It’s easy enough to understand the ghastly accident that befell poor Phineas Gage in Cavendish, Vermont on Sept. 13, 1848: the 25-year-old railroad worker was using an iron rod to tamp down blasting powder when the stuff exploded, sending the 43-inch-long, 13-pound rod through his left cheek and out the top of his head.

What’s not so easy to understand is why Gage survived the accident—or the precise reason for the dramatic change in his personality afterward.
